Dahlia Coccinea is fantastic, large, mostly deciduous perennial that grows from an underground tuber to 1.5 m tall and flowers profusely throughout the warm season with masses of large, bright red flowers on long stalks. Dahlia coccinea is widespread in seasonally dry woodland and scrubland from southern Mexico to El Salvador from low elevations to 3400 m. Flowers and foliage are frost sensitive but the underground tubers can manage to survive even cooler, temperate winters if mulched.
