Butter beans or Lima beans are native to Peru, where they have been cultivated for thousands of years. Like all beans, they are a rich source of protein and fibre. Limas typically require about 70 days after germination to be harvested as a shell bean but are sensitive to cold soil so germinate first under glass in pots before planting out 15cm apart when the soil temperature has reached 60 F or above.
